Once More Unto The Breach…

OK. I persist. I shall not be turned aside. Brace yourself. Gird you loins.

Try not to groan….

…today is May 17th…

…and that means it is….

Norwegian Constitution Day – The day Norway became an independent nation in 1814. All the Norwegians will be parting today!

Ascension – The day Jesus (if you believe the Bible and incredibly some folk do) bodily ascended to Heaven.

International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) – Today is the day we are all meant to be against homophobia, well we should be against it every day but today is significant because today marks the same day in 1990 when homosexuality was removed from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organisation. Yes, you read that right. 1990! Just 17 years ago the world authority on disease agreed homosexuality wasn’t one! I didn’t even know it was on the list let alone taking so long to be taken off! Madness!

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day -This is not so exciting as the others perhaps (perhaps? hmm, I’m in a charitable mood). The 17th May marks the anniversary of the signature of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union.
International Telecommunication Union is the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technology. As the global focal point for governments and the private sector in developing telecommunication networks and services, ITU’s role in helping the world communicate spans 3 core sectors: radiocommunication, standardisation and development of ICT worldwide. ITU also organizes Telecom events, the leading ICT showcase, as well as workshops and symposia for the benefit of the global community.
ITU is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and its membership includes 191 Member States and more than 700 Sector Members and Associates. World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated since 1969.

Are you still awake after that last one? Well done if you are 🙂

I wasn’t going to put it in but if anyone in the world will be stroppy their special day isn’t included it’d be the folk who already know today is World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. Though, given I’m writing this on a blog and posting it on-line so anyone with access to the internet can read it I suppose it’s an apt one to mention.

I hope you found this even slightly interesting. I’m just trying to broaden my horizons and by extension yours. 🙂

By force if necessary….. only kidding…

…no I’m not…

…yes I am…

…no I’m not…

  1. It makes me laugh that no-one has commented on this one… do you think anybody was awake after the last paragraph…? 😉

I am sitting here wondering if I inadvertently stumbled into A level business studies or something.. not one I was even good at the first time round 😆

    Very interesting.. keep going… 🙂 honestly…

    😉

  2. Also.. I am honestly stunned by the fact that homophobia was ever listed as a disease!!!!?!?! How outrageous.. ?

The fact that it then took till 1990 to take it off th elist as a disease yet again.. astonishing. Seriously.. With you on that one.

    Shocked. 😮
